Mongolia Tourism Decline Continues

Mongolia tourism logo sloganThe Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Mongolia released a statistical report of inbound tourism industry of Mongolia for the first seven months of 2014.

According to statistics, a total of 210,587 foreign travelers visited Mongolia by July 2014 which is short of by 17,959 or 7.8% compared to the same period of the last year.

Thus, the number of inbound travelers from Asia-Pacific region reached 127,549 travelers – a 11.3% decline; 79,955 travelers from Europe - a decline by 0.2%; 2,017 travelers from Americas – a decline by 42.8%; 644 from Middle East – an increase by 71.2% and 421 travelers from Africa – a decrease by 32.4%.

Traditionally, the largest number of travelers came from China (84,248 visitors) and Russia (38,469 visitors) followed by South Korea (24,074), Japan (8,579), USA (8,537), Kazakhstan (7,794), Germany (5,180), France (4,205), UK (3,084) and Australia (2,998).

During the first seven months, the gross revenue from tourism industry reached only USD 131,357,327 USD – a decline by USD 14,036,070 or 9.6%.

This is the second consecutive year of decline in Mongolian tourism industry. Thus, for example the number of foreign visitors Mongolia reached only 333,000 as of September, 2013 compared to 475,000 of 2012.
