dinosaur_museum_mongolian_logoA website of so-called “Central Museum of Dinosaurs” is launched. Mongolia is the country of dinosaurs; though, it has been sending its fossils to international exhibitions for the last 20 years.

In January, 2013 the Government of Mongolia issued a decree to build the new “Central Museum of Dinosaurs”. According to the decree, the museum would be established in order to “protect and pass Mongolia’s cultural heritages to next generations and increase awareness of paleontological findings”.

The very first exhibition of the new museum administration was the display of famous T.Bataar (Tarbosaurus Bataar) starting from June, 2013 at Sukhbaatar Square. During the display throughout the summer of 2013, approximately half a million people visited the exhibition. More fossils currently abroad are expected to be returned to Mongolia within next few years.

The new dinosaur museum will be probably located at former Lenin museum.  After the peaceful transition of Mongolia into market economy in early 1990s, the museum stopped its operation as a museum and was used as a shopping center. The museum building is considered as the only building in Mongolia that meets museum criteria, however, a case is under review by court after the Mongolian People’s Party (former communist party) failed to hand over the museum to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Mongolia.

You can visit the museum’s website at www.dinosaurmuseum.mn for up-to-date information of the museum.
